Surviving the Wilderness

Surviving in the wilderness use to be part of everyday life. Having an understanding and knowledge of survival skills is smart for anyone living in their modern cocoon, even though they may feel protected and safe. These skill sets are not only for backpackers, sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts, although those are now the only people with such skills.

At this point you might be wondering what exactly are survival skills. Survival skills involves the know-how and techniques that will help you survive in hazardous conditions or dangerous locations. These techniques could save your life should you find yourself in an extreme environment such as a jungle, desert, or mountains; or if you are in a bad storm or earthquake. Some of the skills you should learn include how to build a shelter, how to pack a survival kit, how to gain clean drinking water, and how to build a fire. These skills will help you no matter what the situation is whether it is winter survival, or survival in the desert, forest or mountain.

The next couple of paragraphs will look at these survival skills and give you a better understanding what each skill entails. The order of focus for survival skills relate to the basic human needs and the circumstance you find yourself in. Shelter is usually the first task to take on when you find yourself in a bad situation, this will give you protection from the harsh conditions. Shelter is a priority because it will get you out of the harsh conditions should it be intense sun, rain, or snow; you shelter could be a lean-to or could be constructed from the poncho that you have in your survival kit.

Clean drinking water is the next important skill to surviving in an extreme condition. You can do this in several different manners, and it depends on where you find yourself. In the desert you can use condensation traps while in the jungle you could find water in the vines of trees or you could find a stream or river. Before any water should be considered drinkable you should bring it to a boil first.

The next survival skill we will look at is building a fire, you will not be able to boil your water unless you first build fire. Fire is useful for warmth as well as protection. While a fire can make surviving easier, in most situations a shelter is more important.

Next we will look at the survival kit, depending on the situation surrounding your survival you may not have a survival kit. I recommend a survival book and a first aid kit in any survival bag, these could save your life should anything bad ever happen to you. Injuries need to be tended to before they get worse and could ruin any chance you have at surviving.
